Scaling & Root Planing

When bacteria spread and cause gum pockets to form, scaling and root planing can be used to improve gum health. Scaling requires that Dr. Shah remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the teeth and around the gumline. Root planing is the process of going deep within the gum pockets to smooth out the tooth roots so that the gums will reattach, bacteria will be less likely to adhere in the future, and the soft tissues will begin to heal.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

Oftentimes, bacteria can be hard to reach using traditional dental instruments. This is why we use laser periodontal treatment. Dr. Shah’s Picasso laser targets unhealthy gum tissue, removing it so that it does not negatively affect healthy areas of the mouth. The laser’s precision ensures that all non-diseased tissues remain untouched, focusing solely on small crevices and patches that need to be removed. The use of the laser allows for a more comfortable and pain-free dental experience.

Antibiotic Treatment

Bacteria can easily burrow into crevices that instruments and lasers cannot reach, which is why antibiotic therapy is often used in combination with scaling and root planing or laser periodontal treatment. Dr. Shah will provide you with a rinse that you will perform during your appointment so that the medicine disperses into the tiniest areas of the mouth, eliminating harmful bacteria that might otherwise continue to attack the gums and cause further damage.
