Children’s Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Routine checkups and cleanings are crucial for patients of all ages, and that includes the littlest members of your family. Dr. Shah and her team are as gentle as possible during these appointments, personalizing our approach to match your child’s level of maturity. We also keep an eye out for any developmental concerns that could cause problems later on for your child’s growing smile. To prevent decay, further measures like dental sealants and fluoride treatments can be applied, providing valuable protection for vulnerable teeth and gums.

Dental Sealants

Sometimes, young smiles need a little extra protection from damage, especially if your child is still learning to take care of their teeth and gums. In particular, your child’s back molars can often be tricky to reach and clean properly. At South Arlington Dental Care, Dr. Shah recommends dental sealants as a valuable preventive measure that minimizes the risk of cavities and helps children keep smiling brightly.

Dental sealants consist of a tough, plastic material that’s painted directly over the chewing surfaces of teeth, effectively “sealing” them shut. This prevents food particles and dangerous bacteria from being able to accumulate in the area. With proper care, sealants last up to 10 years!

Athletic Mouthguards/ Sportsguards

Children who play sports need proper mouth protection to avoid a sudden trip to the emergency dentist’s office. This is why we offer athletic sportsguards. Customized using impressions taken of your child’s smile, the oral device is worn over the top row of teeth to minimize any pressure that is placed on their teeth and gums during a game. Unlike store-bought options, those crafted by our dental team are made to fit comfortably and last.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

A cavity-stricken tooth requires treatment to prevent the spread of decay; however, your child may not be ready for a tooth-colored filling. In this situation, we can use silver diamine fluoride. The silver kills the bacteria, while the fluoride combats potential decay and strengthens the existing tooth. By applying it to the affected area, the tooth will avoid further damage until a proper filling can be applied.

Pulp Therapy

When the pulp of your child’s tooth is infected or severely damaged, Dr. Shah can recommend pulp therapy to alleviate the pain and avoid further damage to their smile. By removing the affected portion of the tooth – the pulp – she can repair it with the help of a dental crown so that your child can continue to eat and speak without any trouble. Not to mention, by removing the infected pulp, your little one will no longer experience any pain!

Airway Dentistry

If your child is struggling to breathe throughout the night, and it is making it difficult for them to get a full night’s sleep, we can use orthodontic appliances to help. These devices are designed to expand your child’s airway and address issues of snoring, sleep apnea, and other sleep-disordered breathing concerns.
