Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

We touched on the fact that routine dental checkups and teeth cleanings allow us to catch and prevent serious oral health problems (i.e., tooth decay, gum disease, loose restorations) above. However, that’s just one of several reasons why coming in twice a year for a visit with Dr. Shah and the rest of our Pantego dental team is so important. Another reason is that dental issues can develop under the radar; it’s often not until the symptoms are severe that patients even notice. It’s also worth noting that your biannual exams check for non-dental issues as well, like oral cancer. Simply put, these routine appointments benefit your oral and overall health!

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Your dental checkup will be with Dr. Shah, our experienced, passionate, and talented dentist. After catching up with you (or getting to know you, if you’re a new patient), she will take a look at your X-rays, visually examine your teeth and gums, and complete an oral cancer screening. This usually only takes a few minutes, and she will share all of her findings once she’s done. That way, she can answer any questions you have and help you navigate what’s needed to maintain or restore your healthy smile moving forward.

The dental cleaning is typically the longer part of the visit, and it’s very important. At this time, one of our gentle and friendly dental hygienists will clear away plaque and tartar that has accumulated since your last visit. They’ll also floss and polish your teeth, which will leave your pearly whites looking and feeling great when you leave our office!
