Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Safe?
January 20, 2020
Have you ever avoided seeing your dentist because you were nervous? If so, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that at least 1 in 5 Americans has put off getting needed dental care because they’re scared of the dentist. Whether it’s due to cost, time, or just not liking someone poking around in your mouth, dental anxiety is more common than you might think. For this reason, sedation options like nitrous oxide have been developed. But are they safe? Read this guide on what exactly nitrous oxide is and whether it has any side effects.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
This colorless, odorless gas is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. When you breathe it in, it displaces the oxygen molecules in your body. Oxygen then has a harder time getting to your brain. This deprivation is what causes the euphoric effect of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas.”
The Sedation Process
Before your dentist begins your treatment, they will place a mask over your nose. Through this mask you will breathe in the gas. Within minutes, a wave of relaxation will wash over you, soothing your nerves and allowing you to get the dental treatment you need without any of the anxiety. Once your procedure is done, the mask will be removed. It will only take a few minutes for the effects of the nitrous oxide to leave your system, meaning you can soon drive yourself home and resume your day as normal.
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide
For patients with mild to moderate anxiety at the thought of getting dental work done, nitrous oxide is the perfect solution. Your worries will be a thing of the past just a few minutes after the nasal mask is placed.
In addition to calming anxieties, nitrous oxide is also beneficial for people with sensitive teeth and gums. Plus, it can suppress an overly touchy gag reflex. Lastly, it can allow uncooperative children or those with special needs to receive the care they need easily.
Does Nitrous Oxide Present Any Health Risks?
As with any medical procedure, there are some slight risks. If the nitrous is too high, for example, it could result in side effects like headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Keep in mind, however, that the chances of these side effects occurring are extremely slim, as we closely monitor the amount of sedation you’re receiving throughout the procedure. You should be able to get your dental work done just fine.
If you’ve ever avoided getting needed dental work done because of anxiety, contact your dentist today and ask if they offer nitrous oxide. Your smile will thank you for it!
