When Was the Last Time You Replaced Your Toothbrush?
March 22, 2020
Your toothbrush is your first line of defense against preventable issues that can harm your smile, like cavities and gum disease. It’s best to spend at least two minutes twice per day cleaning all surfaces of your teeth and your tongue. Your regular oral hygiene routine will cause wear and tear on your toothbrush, but how often should you replace it? Here’s what you need to know to keep your smile healthy in-between visits to your dentist.
How often does my toothbrush need to be replaced?
The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months; however, you should get a new one sooner under certain circumstances, such as if the bristles are frayed. As the bristles become worn, they will not be as effective. This can leave harmful buildup on your teeth that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
Despite what you might have heard, changing your toothbrush when you’re sick or not feeling well won’t prevent further illness or disease. Whether you’re well or not, it’s best to change your toothbrush regularly for maximum effectiveness.
How can I choose the best toothbrush?
When it’s time to change your toothbrush, you’ll be surrounded by several options, each claiming to be the best. Believe it or not, not all toothbrushes are created equally. To find the right one for you, here are some important tips to keep in mind:
- Choose a toothbrush that has earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance.
- Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Ensure the brush head accommodates the size of your mouth.
- Consider the handle comfort.
Is an electric toothbrush better?
It’s often thought electric toothbrushes are better than manual ones; however, this isn’t necessarily true. Research shows both are equally effective when the correct brushing methods are used. Unfortunately, most people only spend 45 seconds brushing their teeth. As a result, an electric toothbrush can be more effective because it offers more brush strokes per minute than a manual one.
While an electric toothbrush has its advantages, it depends on your individual needs and preferences. No matter the type you choose, be sure to use the correct brushing techniques:
- Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste applied to the bristles of the brush.
- Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line.
- Use a gentle circular motion to clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the backsides.
- Gently clean your tongue and the insides of your cheeks.
Besides brushing, don’t forget to floss your teeth every night before going to bed. For optimal oral health, schedule an appointment with your dentist for a cleaning and checkup at least twice a year. You’ll enjoy a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime with the right dental products by your side.
